Our association, in collaboration with the Italian Philatelic-Numismatic Association (A.F.I.) and the National Association of Aeronautics Officials (A.N.U.A.), will organize in Rome, on October 21st and 22nd, 2023<\/strong>, at the “Casa dell\u2019Aviatore” (House of the Aviator), specifically in the prestigious “Francesco Baracca” hall, a philatelic-documentary exhibition dedicated to the Centenary of the Italian Air Force, under the patronage of the Italian Air Force itself. Since both A.F.I. and A.N.U.A. have always been federated associations, the event has also received the patronage of the Federation of Italian Philatelic Societies (FSFI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event, named “ALI DENTELLATE<\/strong>\u201d aims to commemorate the Centenary of the Italian Air Force and is characterized by two important events: the A.F.I.-A.N.U.A. 2023 Conference and the 50th<\/sup> Day of Aerophilately<\/strong>, both focusing on the milestones that have characterized the development of the Italian Air Force over its hundred years of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For AIDA this significant event also marks the occasion for its 50th<\/sup> Day of Aerophilately, an undoubtedly important milestone. This time, contrary to our usual “Day,” for which strict constraints of competitive exhibitions are not imposed, the only constraint here is to properly commemorate a century of our Italian Air Force’s history. Therefore, valuable collections, not only philatelic but also historical-documentary, are on display, reviewing the various phases of its development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are highlighted the MILESTONES<\/strong> of the “100 years of the Italian Air Force” that will characterize the philatelic-documentary exhibition, accompanied by an exhibition of Medals, curated by the Italian Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Origins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Events related to the Pioneer period, the Italo-Turkish War, World War I, and the first experiments in airmail transportation are discussed here, including the 1917 flights from Turin to Rome and back, as well as Naples to Palermo and back. In practice, the use of Italian aviation that would eventually merge in 1923 into the Italian Air Force. What is illustrated here represents the right preamble to the events that would later characterize the Italian Air Force in our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great Aviator Raids<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This section considers the great solo or sport aviation feats over time, featuring pilots such as Arturo Ferrarin (1920 Rome-Tokyo Raid), Mario De Bernardi (1926 Schneider Cup in Norfolk), Francesco De Pinedo (1925 Sesto Calende-Australia-Japan-Rome Raid and the 1927 “Santa Maria” Cruise of the Two Americas), Arturo Ferrarin again with Carlo Del Prete (1928 Non-stop Flight Italy-Brazil), Francis Lombardi (1930 Rome-Tripoli-Massawa-Mogadishu Raid, 1934 Direct Mail Flight Rome-Buenos Aires, Special Flight Rome-Mogadishu), and others. While all these endeavors featured “heavier-than-air” aircraft, it should be noted that in those same years, “lighter-than-air” aircraft were also involved in memorable feats, such as Umberto Nobile’s polar expeditions in 1926 with the airship “Norge” and the ill-fated 1928 expedition with the airship “Italia.” Additionally, the arrival of the German airship “Graf Zeppelin” in Rome, attended by the King and top officials of the Italian Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italo Balbo’s Cruises<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This section highlights the mass air cruises organized by Italo Balbo, who advocated for the Italian Air Force as an autonomous branch of the military. In particular: the Western Mediterranean Cruises of 1928 and the Eastern Mediterranean Cruises of 1929, the Italy-Brazil Atlantic Cruise of 1930, and the Decennial Cruise (North Atlantic) of 1933, held on the occasion of the Chicago Expo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civil Aviation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development of civil aviation is described here, including the creation of the first national airline, Ala Littoria, which merged all private airlines in Italy in 1934, with Umberto Kingler at its helm. At the end of the 1930s, the establishment of the Italian Transcontinental Airlines (LATI), by Attilio Biseo and Bruno Mussolini, on the Italy-Brazil route, following the model previously experimented within Ala Littoria, of which LATI can be considered a natural extension. And then, after World War II, the creation of the new national carrier, Alitalia, also resulting from the rationalization of civil aviation in our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jet Flight (Campini-Caproni)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a culmination of the rapid development of the Italian Air Force, which the war would soon bring to an end, the first jet flight from Milan to Guidonia on the famous Campini-Caproni aircraft, piloted by Mario De Bernardi, finds its rightful place here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Era<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, the significant operational and logistical support provided by the Italian Air Force to our country is described, from the post-World War II years to the present day, with the new frontiers of space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will be inaugurated on Saturday, October 21, 2023<\/strong>, at 09:00 a.m.<\/strong>, with the start of the A.F.I.-A.N.U.A. 2023 Conference<\/strong>, consisting of a dozen presentations, each lasting about 20 minutes. The conference will be invitation-only, while the exhibition will be open to the public from 3:00 p.m. on the same day and throughout the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As usual, for the occasion, A.N.U.A. and A.F.I. will prepare two different special cancellations and print two different commemorative special postcards<\/strong>, for which the preliminary images and the sketch of the imprints of the two cancellations (not yet final) are provided. On October 21st, an Italian Post Office branch (from 09:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) will be active, where postcards can be franked, stamped, and mailed; alongside this, there will also be detached postal offices of the Vatican and the SMOM, which will also have specific postal cancellations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
