Various competition venues June, 6 – 14 June 2009
The World Air Games was the most important sport aviation event in the world. Organized and promoted by Fédération Aéronatique Internationale (FAI), in this 2009 edition they were, by approach, assimilated to the Olympic competitions, with general and specialized press coverage and extensive media coverage, using television footage with innovative technologies.
The competitions included the sports of flying, divided into 10 disciplines. A great and exciting Air Festival that attracted, from June, 6 to 16, not only sports practitioners, but also enthusiasts and the general public. Four venues for the races. In addition to Turin, the other competition venues were Collegno, Avigliana and Mondovì. After the inaugural ceremony on June 6th, eight exciting days of competitions followed, distributed as follows in the various competition venues:

The competitions were accompanied by many collateral events: Air Movie Festival, with film screenings dedicated to flying, figurative, photographic and philatelic art exhibitions, organized in various places in the city of Torino. To these must be added an international technical symposium, in which the world’s leading specialists gathered to discuss the most recent developments in aeronautical technology. Finally, model aircraft competitions among students.
Among the collateral events there was therefore the philatelic event, announced for June 6 and 7 by the Association of Philatelic Circles and Sections of Torino and its province and by the Italian Association of Aerophilately (AIDA), comprising about twenty aviation-themed collections. On this occasion a special special cancellation was used dedicated to the “Day of aerophilathely” (see specific page dedicated to this event).
But the WAG, from the philatelic point of view, are also remembered by a series of stamps issued for the occasion by the Republic of San Marino (which has also prepared a special cancellation) and by a second special Italian cancellation, available on June 6th, from 9 am to 6 pm at Torino Air Club, which has also prepared three special postcards for the occasion. A further special cancellation was prepared and used in Avigliana on June 13th.
